Montana Senate Race

This is a purely anecdotal take on the Montana Senate race but I thought I would share it. I’m in Helena on business and got to listen to some local talk shows over the last day or so, most notably Berg in the Morning, who is a statewide guy and deals almost exclusively with local politics.

A large part of the discussion had to do with the news that a local television station decided to pull a Tester ad that was critical of Senator Burns. The discussion then went on the alleged falsehoods in other Tester ads especially the one I heard on the radio today stating affirmatively that Burns is in favor of a 23% tax increase.

Berg got a hold of a Burns campaign worker and attempted to get Tester one on the air, but couldn’t (or wouldn’t) for some reason. The Burns guy obviously attempted to refute the ad and other ads during the segments. The big thing I got from the discussion and subsequent callers to other talk shows is that the people of Montana just want the negatives to stop. It doesn’t matter which candidate is telling the truth and not going negative, that is the guy that they’ll support. So far, it seems that the most negative candidate out there has been Tester and he’s taking a beating in the local press and especially on the local talk shows.

I have nothing to base this on but my own observations which have so far been limited to listening to the local talk shows and watching the local news for the past 2 days, but it’s been overwhelming to see. I know what the current polls show. I know that they show Tester up and Burns in a fight for his life. I can tell you they do not reflect what I see, hear, and feel on the ground and that’s with only 36 hours of being immersed in it.

Interesting indeed.
