Channeling Chicken Little
During a break in the confirmation hearings on CourtTV, the networks afternoon show, Closing Arguments, with Nancy Grace was on as filler for the down time. (I would have preffered not to watch that channel, but unfortunately, none of the other 24 hour news organizations could be bothered to broadcast the hearings -ed.)
On the program, Nancy Grace was joined by a couple of guests which she used in a tag team to pile on Roberts. They were lamenting the fact that Roberts was refusing to answer questions to their satisfaction, as if they are any party to this other than being commentators. The guests were one Abner Green, a former clerk to Justice Stephens, who called Roberts' answers "bogus", and a self-described long-term Republican, recently turned Democrat, Ralph Neas, head of People for the American Way. The shrillness of the rhetoric coming from these three was astounding. I especially loved it when Neas stared emphatically into the camera and declared that "Roberts' views were so critical because he could possibly be on the court for the next ten Presidents and his decisions will effect the daily lives of our children and grand children."
(Yes, Ralph, he could. Isn't it wonderful? -ed)
These people are seriously panicked.
