A Little Perspective, Please

As more and more of the hardest hit areas are reached, the death toll and economic impact will come sharply into focus for those of us not living anywhere near the catastrophe that was the Gulf Coast. We will see, in all the vivid detail that mobile satelite trucks can provide, the hardship and devastation that a Hurricane like this one can bring. I would ask the news hounds looking for national exposure to be respectful. It's not all about getting a gig in NYC or Washington. Please show the victims of this tragedy the dignity they deserve and give them some peace as they attempt to regain their composure and attempt to pick up the pieces of their lives.

I pray for them all and thank God that the toll isn't higher than it could have been, even though I know very well that it will go higher than it is right now.

Today I went to Samaritan's Purse and donated what I could. Would that we could all do the same.

Why are there so many refugees that have absolutly no support system besides the government? The disillusion of the family has hit many of these people hard. It is family that provides a support system during extreme crisis. The only entity these people can turn to is the government, and as this calamity proves, reliance on the state will always be inadequate.

Many of the refugees have spent their entire lives in the city, and know no one outside who can help or take them in. Those with families and friends outside the city either left before the hurricane or soon after, because they had a place to go. They did not have to wait for the government to come in.

I agree, Ken. When a society treats a certain group as a victim, is it really any wonder that they start acting that way? I can't tell you how many times I would see a video click or here a sound bite where someone is screaming "You need to come help us!" with the emphasis on "You." Why should they be accountable for themselves? They've not been made to up to this point.
